KES FW19

Words by Imogen Clark

Lia Kes’ fall-winter 2019 collection was inspired by the way the body moves and the sensitivity attached to it. It all began when Megan Myers visited the designer, the conversation that ensued turned into a cocktail of creative ideas which evolved into an indie dance video. The video was shot on a rainy evening on the upper west side of New York. The clothes and the way they moved with the body with the dance routine, a moment of enlightenment. The combination of the fluid silhouettes and clothes inspired the dancers as they moved, with the colors of the garments representing the season coming ahead.

Designer Lia Kes grew up in the north of Israel, surrounded by nature at its finest with neatly kept fields and orchards while living on a kibbutz. This lifestyle shaped the way she makes garments, through a practical and straightforward manner. The communal sewing building was called ‘matpera’, a place that made clothes for the entire community using simple designs. She has upheld this utilitarian approach to designing since the age of 12, where she was taught how to use a sewing machine. The construction of her fall-winter collection presents evidence of her past, and she has created wearable urban luxe that was vibrantly displayed at her NYFW presentation through the movement of dance.

This season, Lia Kes introduced organic dyes in vibrant colors, with different tones creating an autumnal balance that brings this collection to life.
